HOUSTON - Head coach Kyla Holas announced the University of Houston softball schedule for the upcoming 2007 season Wednesday afternoon.
"We missed NCAA Regionals by one slot last season," Holas said. "That was the biggest factor in determining our non-conference schedule. We've improved our schedule's RPI so when it comes down to the end we get that second glance that we feel we deserve. "
Houston opens the season with a trio of tournaments at the Cougar Softball Stadium. At the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational (Feb. 9-11), the Cougars take on Texas-Arlington in the season opener followed by tilts with 2005 NCAA champions Michigan and Mississippi.
The Cougars welcome LSU, Indiana, Southern Illinois, Missouri State, Texas State and Centenary for the Crowne Plaza Classic (Feb. 15-18).
Houston heads to Baylor (Feb. 20) before returning home to face Iowa State, New Mexico State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Marriott Houston Hobby Invitational (Feb. 23-25).
"Our home schedule is very fan friendly," Holas said. "There are some great softball programs coming here to Houston. I know our fans recognize that and will come out strong to support us."
The Cougars conclude the tournament schedule with a trip to the Sun Devil Invitational (Mar. 2-4). Houston will get a crack at Women's College World Series participant Arizona State in addition to UC-Santa Barbara, Creighton, Utah Valley State and North Florida.
Houston plays hosts Texas A&M (Mar. 7) for a mid-week doubleheader before opening conference play at Southern Miss (Mar. 10-11)
The Cougars sandwich trips to NCAA Tournament participants Georgia Tech (Mar. 14) and Auburn (Mar. 15) before getting a chance against defending C-USA champions Tulsa (Mar. 17-18) at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Houston continues C-USA action with trips to Memphis (Mar. 24-25), UTEP (Apr. 6-7) and East Carolina (Apr. 28-29). The Cougars finish the C-USA slate with home games against UAB (Mar. 31-Apr. 1), UCF (Apr. 21-22), and Marshall (May 5-6)
"Tulsa and Marshall were tough trips because we never been there before," Holas said. "It will be nice to have the comfort of playing those teams at home. This schedule will test us and see what we're made of all season."
The Cougars also have mid-week doubleheaders scheduled at Sam Houston State (Mar. 28) and Holas' alma-mater Louisiana-Lafayette (Apr. 18).
"ULL does a great job of welcoming visiting teams in," Holas said. "It's not easy to play there because it's a hostile environment, but I know our players will be up for the challenge."
Houston concludes the regular season with a trip to the C-USA Tournament (May 11-13) in Orlando on the UCF campus.
"I'm really excited about the conference tournament going to Orlando," Holas said. "The weather and big city atmosphere is very comparable to Houston."
