ITA Regional Recap - Day One

FORT WORTH - The University of Houston tennis team opened the ITA Regionals with an 8-2 mark in singles action Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
Leila Salek, Vicky Simpson and Sonja Nikolic all notched a pair of qualifying wins. Salek came through with two straight set wins, while Simpson and Nikolic each had to win a three-set affair along the way to the final round of qualifying. The trio needs only one more victory Friday morning to secure a spot for the main draw, joining Loli Gomez and Rebecca Franzi. Main draw competition begins Friday at 11:30am.
Anna Djananova was the only Cougar to lose her opening round qualifying match. She dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision to third-seeded Brenna Jackson of Texas Tech. The freshman bounced back with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the singles consolation.
Neila Starratt also went 1-1 on day one, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the opening round before losing a hard fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 match.
The Cougars recorded a 2-2 record in doubles action. The pairs of Gomez/Salek in addition to Djananova/ Simpson picked up wins to advance to Friday afternoon's second round. Franzi/Nikolic and D'Ondra McGee/Starratt will play consolation matches Friday after losing in the opening round.
