HOUSTON, Texas - Junior Ebonie Floyd continued her swift recovery from a two-year layoff Friday night, winning the 200 meters in the Leonard Hilton Memorial Indoor at the Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Floyd led her heat in 24.29 seconds and edged out teammate LaDedra Guy, winner of a different heat in 24.45.
In December of 2003, Floyd suffered a stress fracture in a shin in an automobile crash while traveling with her parents, former Olympians Stanley and Delissa Floyd, to Georgia to visit her grandmother, Ebonie had been the Conference USA Freshman of the Year at the conference indoor and outdoor meets and was a semifinalist in the NCAA Outdoor 400.
After redshirting in 2004 because of injuries and in 2005 for personal reasons, Ebonie returned to competition a week ago in the Houston Indoor Opener with a 54-flat relay leg on the Lady Cougars' 4x400.
"Ebonie is stronger and leaner than her freshman year so I'm not surprised," UH head coach Leroy Burrell said. "There was never any question she'd come back strong and that she will be even stronger by the end of the year."
"She looked so good and so smooth coming home," said UH assistant Theresa Fuqua. "I'm totally amazed at how good she's looked so far this early in the year."
Senior Jonathan Reeves, competing unattached because he has completed his indoor eligibility, threw the shot 59-3 1/4 on the final throw of the event, his best ever indoors or outdoors, to overtake Texas' Brian Robison (57-4 1/4), Robison had beaten Reeves in similar fashion a week earlier.
The Cougars also won the distance medley relay in 10:28.98 ad the 4x400 in 3:14.22. Kolee Latson (47.9) and Carey LaCour (48.2) featured the 4x400 in their only race of the meet. Paul Goodwin, 3:16 on the opening 1200 meters and Calum Neff, 4:20 on the closing mile, led the distance medley.
Texas' men outscored UH 135 to 70 1/2 iand the Lady Longhorns outpointed Rice 102 1/2 with the Lady Cougars third..
The UH men and women compete next weekend at Boise, Idaho on a 200-meter banked track similar to the one at Arkansas for the NCAA meet in March.
