HOUSTON - The University of Houston Baseball team will gear up for the upcoming 2006 season and celebrate the accomplishments of a former player during the team's annual preseason banquet on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The banquet, which will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the UH Hilton (4800 Calhoun), begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception and cash bar. Dinner is scheduled to start around 7:30 p.m.
Members of the 2006 Cougar Baseball Team and coaching staff will be recognized. In addition, former Cougar Rob Johnson will be honored as the program's Professional Baseball Player of the Year.
Individual tickets are available for $45, and fans can sponsor a Cougar Baseball player for a similar cost. Various table reservations with seating for 10 people also are available. For more information, call Traci Cauley with the UH Baseball Office at 713-743-9396.
Business attire is requested. Seating is limited, and reservations are guaranteed based on the order in which they are received, so fans should make plans for the banquet soon.
The Cougars, who were ranked No. 32 in Collegiate Baseball magazine's preseason poll, open the 2006 season at 2 p.m., Feb. 7, when they play host to Texas-San Antonio at Cougar Field.
From there, the team will compete at the Astros College Classic on Feb. 10-12 at Minute Maid Park. At that round-robin tournament, UH will meet No. 1 Texas at 7 p.m. p.m., Feb. 10 and No. 19 TCU at 3:30 p.m., Feb. 11. The Cougars then close out the three-day event with an 11 a.m., showdown on Feb. 12 against Texas Tech.
