HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team began practice on Tuesday afternoon for the 2006 season under clear skies at the Cougar Softball Stadium. After practice, the team spent time in the weight room.
"Overall I thought that practice was good," head coach Kyla Holas said. "We came back in better shape than I thought we would, and I felt like we haven't missed a step from the fall season. That's says a lot about this team after being away for a month."
The Cougars spent the afternoon on the practice field working on the fundamentals of fielding and hitting.
"Defensively I thought we were very strong," Holas said. "I didn't get a chance to see the live hitting, but I thought our drills in the cage went well."
The Cougars continue workouts all week in preparation for the season opener which is 30 days away.
"It's nice whenever you can come in and not have to start all over again," Holas said. "That is going to improve our practices and move us along a lot faster."
Houston opens the 2006 season against Oregon in the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational. First pitch against the Ducks is slated for 4pm on Feb. 10 at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars face off against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 30 minutes after the conclusion of the season opener.
