Figueroa Leads Cougars To Third-Place Finish At Islander Splash

Corpus Christi, Texas - Lady Cougars finish in sixth place
University of Houston senior distance runner Sesar Figueroa registered a second-place finish at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Splash cross country meet Friday night. Figueroa completed the five-mile course with a time of 25:48. The Islanders' Shadrack Songok was the men's individual champion with a time of 25:33, and Diego Borrego finished third with a time of 25:52.
Sam Houston State won the men's team title with 38 points as the Bearkats had four of the top eight runners in the men's race. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished in second place with 44 points, while Houston was third with 72 points.
Houston's other runners included Maurilio Sanchez, who had a sixth-place finish with a time of 28:05, and Gus Forward finished in 16th place with a time of 29.27.
In the women's race, freshman Kelcee Keenan had a seventh-place finish as she completed the three-mile course in 18:43. Texas A&M-CC's Magaly Burciaga was the women's champion with a time of 18:19 as the Lady Islanders had the top five finishers, and six of the top eight runners to win the women's team title with 15 points.
Sophomore Oumama Hallal was Houston's other Top-10 runner as she finished the race with a time of 19:07. Senior Shawna Florida finished in 38th place with a time of 20:34.
