HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team came away with a 10-0 blowout victory over Nicholls State Tuesday afternoon at Robertson Stadium. The Cougars have now won four consecutive matches, its longest winning streak since 2001 when UH strung together six wins in row.
Houston put on an offensive clinic as three different Cougars, Sophia Mundy, Jennifer Dry, and Brittney Pfeiffer; each had two goals. UH also outshot the Colonels 39-2 for the entire match.
"It's always good to win at home," head coach Bill Solberg said. "My main concern coming into the game was tired we were going to be from Sunday's game in the heat. It took us awhile to get moving and to clean up what we were doing."
The scoreless tie was broken in the 29th minute when Mundy scored in the box on an assist from Dry.
Only seven minutes later, the rout was on as Pfeiffer scored her first goal of her young career on a touch pass from Jessica Green.
Just moments later in the 38th minute, Mundy scored her second goal in the box within a 10 minute span, this time from Christie Stephens.
Moments before halftime, the Cougars added a fourth goal in 13 minutes as Pfeiffer scored her second goal firing in a rocket taking the ball in mid-air off a rebound from an Abbey Betlach shot giving UH a 4-0 advantage going into the break.
"We certainly have found a way to score the last couple of games and I think that's going to help us down the road and give us some confidence," commented Solberg.
In the second half it was Jennifer Dry who put the game away for the Cougars by scoring her first two career goals 19 minutes apart.
"I think they (Pfeiffer, Brady, and Dry) and were really excited, and the scored they scored were legit," Solberg said. "The reason they scored those goals is they worked so hard. They both came in with a lot of energy and they got rewarded for that."
Houston got goals in the second half from Stephens, Heather Williams, Amie Brady, and Sarah Fisher, who scored her third goal of the season in the 59th minute on a penalty kick against Colonels keeper Sarah Neuzing.
Next up for the Cougars is a road trip to Louisiana to take on Louisiana Lafayette on Friday night before heading to McNeese State on Sunday afternoon.
"The momentum is great for us, and Louisiana Lafayette is going to be an awesome challenge for us on the road, Solberg said. "We've only had one home game so it will be a great experience for us to be in a different environment then Robertson Stadium."
