HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team began preparations for this weekend's Conference USA showdown against Southern Miss with a solid workout Tuesday afternoon at the UH Athletics Complex.
The Cougars continue their Conference USA schedule as they play host to Southern Miss at 6 p.m., Saturday at the friendly confines of John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. The game can be heard live on ESPN 790 AM with Tom Franklin handling play-by-play duties and Tony Fitzpatrick providing color analysis. Former All-Southwest Conference center Chuck Brown serves as the roving sideline reporter.
Fans also can hear the game on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com. Also, Saturday's game will be televised as pay-per-view through the College Sports Television All-Access Pass. Video will come from the UH video boards, while the audio will be the Houston-ISP Sports Network call.
The Cougars come into the game on the heels of a disappointing 44-41 loss at UTEP in double overtime Friday to open the Conference USA season. While head coach Art Briles said he was upset about the outcome against the Miners, he, his coaching staff and players were looking forward to this weekend's contest.
"I wasn't sure that I was going to live, but the good Lord blessed me with some more days," Briles said at his weekly press conference. "Now I am back up being a fighter again. We are going to learn and live to fight again. That's what we are going to do."
If recent history is any indicator, fans should be in for a treat at this weekend's contest. A year ago, USM took a 35-29 win over the Cougars in Hattiesburg, Miss., but had to go to overtime before the game was decided.
"They play hard, and I like that in teams, because I know that we do too," said Briles, who is now in his third year. "They like to play physical football, which is what we like to do. We are just a good match for each other."
