HOUSTON, Texas - The daily late summer rains came and went, and the University of Houston football team was able to return to the outdoors this afternoon, one day removed from having to move its practice indoors thanks in part to the thunderstorms.
Working in half pads (helmets, shoulder pads and shorts) this afternoon, the Cougars continued their annual fall practice in preparation for the 2005 season. With one full week of practice under his belt, UH head coach Art Briles is proud of his team's performance, both on the field and in the classroom.
"It is going well," commented Briles. "The main thing that we're concerned with is everyone finishing up summer school properly (and) getting everyone in and out of there with the grades they need to get. Once we get through that, then we'll continue with what we've been doing.
"Like I've said from Day One, these guys have a purpose, and urgency and a great attitude while they're doing it."
The Cougars will wrap up summer school officially on Thursday, so Saturday brings about the first round of two-a-days for Houston. Briles is confident his team will be prepared for the annual double days portion of preseason camp.
"We'll actually start our first day of two-a-days on Saturday," added Briles, "and that will be the first time we will do it this fall. Then, we'll have some (two-a-days) the following week on Monday and Wednesday and then maybe that following Saturday."
Houston will go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 pm on the UH Practice Fields, weather permitting. Inclement weather will send the Cougars indoors to the Yeoman Field House.
