HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston Cougars continued fall practice with a two-hour workout this afternoon on the UH Practice Fields. The Cougars ran through a multitude of drills, repetitions and exercises in preparation for the season opener exactly four weeks from today.
UH opens the 2005 season by playing host to Oregon on September 1 at Reliant Stadium.
"Yesterday, we had a really good day with a lot of intensity, a lot of spirit and a lot of retention," said UH head coach Art Briles, "(and is) basically what we got from the spring into the fall. Now, we are just starting our chore, our grind because what we have to do is produce and come with a workman-like attitude and be ready for our season opener against the University of Oregon.
"That's our main objective and that's what motivates us everyday."
Even with the heat and humidity of a Houston summer bearing down on his charges, Briles is extremely pleased with his team's attitude and summer conditioning.
"They are in really good shape," added Briles. "Coach (J.D.) Berna and his staff did a great job with them this summer. We've got some pretty big guys out here and we're not that concerned about them cramping or doing anything because we know they are in great shape.
"That's not an issue right now for us. The issues are making sure we keep our chemistry right, that we are mentally tough and we stay physically prepared."
Houston will return to the practice field for Day Three tomorrow at 5 pm.
