HOUSTON, Texas - The quest for the 2005 Conference USA championship officially began today, when the University of Houston football team hit the practice fields this afternoon for its first workout as a team.
Entering his third season as the Cougars' head coach, Art Briles is pleased to have this day finally arrive.
"Every day is a charm because we are excited to be doing what we're doing (by) representing the University of Houston," commented Briles, "(and we) love the university and could care less about any place or anybody else. I'm concerned about our football team and our people involved with our program and that's it.
"We know our players a lot better, and we know what buttons to push, and they know what buttons to push on us. They've done a great job in the off season, and they've come in in excellent shape. They're excited."
Houston finished the 2004 season with a disappointing 3-8 record, one year removed from a postseason appearance in the 2003 Sheraton Hawai'I Bowl. So, Briles knows his Cougars are looking to return to their winning ways once this season begins on September 1 versus Oregon.
"There's a little bit of redemption and a little feeling that we have something to prove," added Briles. "We're excited about the opportunity to do that."
The Cougars return to the practice fields tomorrow for a 4:45 pm practice and will continue with one-a-day workouts through next week.
