HOUSTON, Texas - The preseason accolades continue to roll in for the University of Houston, as a pair of Cougar juniors, outside linebacker Wade Koehl and wide receiver Vincent Marshall, were today named to preseason watch lists for their respective positions.
Koehl was selected to the Lombardi Award Watch List, which honors the nation's top lineman (including tight ends and linebackers), while Marshall was named to the Fred Biletnikoff Award Watch List, an honor given to the nation's top wide receiver. This tandem joins junior quarterback Kevin Kolb on the preseason watch lists, as Kolb was honored earlier this summer with selections to both the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award watch lists.
A two-year starter at outside linebacker, Koehl was a 2004 preseason selection to the Butkus Award Watch List and finished the season with a team-high 115 tackles. In 2003, as a true freshman Koehl was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team after racking up 61 total stops in six games as a starter. He has tallied 13 tackles for loss and four sacks in his career and registered double-digits in seven of 11 games a year ago, including a career-high 17 against East Carolina.
As for Marshall, he is coming off a 2004 campaign that saw him register the first 1,000-yard receiving year of his career, finishing the season with 1,040 yards with five touchdowns on 61 receptions. For his effort, Marshall was named to the C-USA Second Team.
Marshall is just one of a handful of returning Division I-A receivers who posted 1,000-yards receiving last season. He also racked up six 100-yard receiving games in 2004, including four in a row during midseason and 190 against Southern Miss on national television. Marshall enters the 2005 campaign looking to become just the sixth receiver in UH history to top 2,000 yards receiving in a career.
Both the Lombardi and Biletnikoff Awards will be paired down during the regular season, with both trophies handed out at the conclusion of the 2005 season.
