Houston Suffers Rough Start On First Day of NCAA Championships

Sacramento, Calif. - The University of Houston men's and women's track and field teams got off to a rough start and could not recover on the first day of the NCAA Championships at Sacramento, California on Wednesday.
The Cougars began the day with their men's 4x100-meter relay team failing to advance to Friday's final as they finished with the ninth-fastest time overall. The Cougars had a third-place finish in the first of three heats as Vincent Marshall, Preston Perry, Tremaine Smith and Carey LaCour combined for a time of 39.35 seconds.
Houston also suffered a blow in the first round of the women's 400-meter dash as Keisha Howard In the first round of the women's 400-meter dash, Keisha Howard had a third-place finish in the fifth heat of the first round with a time of 53.78 seconds. Howard's time was the 20th-fastest time overall after she posted the nation's ninth-fastest time earlier this season.
Senior hurdlers Andrew Carruthers and Alicia Cave did advance to the semifinals of the 110-meter and 100-meter hurdles, respectively.
Carruthers had a time of 14.02 seconds to finish in sixth place in the first of three first round heats. His time was the 16th fastest overall.
In the semifinals, he also had a sixth-place showing in the second of two heats as he finished the race in 14.07 seconds.
Cave advanced to the semifinals with a time of 13.70 seconds in the first of three heats in the first round as she finished in fifth place.
In the semifinals, Cave had a ninth-place finish in the second heat with a time of 14.10 seconds.
Houston will look to for better outcomes on Thursday as Carruthers is scheduled to run in the first round of the men's 400-meter hurdles, while Cave will join Tiffany Abney in the first round of the women's 400-meter hurdles.
In addition, LaCour, Perry and Smith will race in the firs round of the men's 200-meter dash. The semifinals of that event will be held later in the day.
Joining them will be Krystal Ward, who will be competing in the women's high jump, while Howard, Cave, Cheryl Garner and Abney are scheduled to run in the first round of the women's 4x400-meter relay on Thursday as well.
Ward will also compete in the women's heptathlon on Friday, and Caresir Hamilton is scheduled to compete in the women's triple jump on Friday as well.
