HOUSTON - University of Houston junior Azul Almazan and senior point guard Joann Overstreet received the Conference USA Scholar-Athlete awards for swimming & diving and women's basketball, respectively, Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Thursday.
Houston was one of six schools to boast at least two winners of the Scholar-Athlete Award. The honor is presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport. The award is based on academic achievement, athletic achievement and service.
Overstreet, who posted a 3.61 cumulative grade point average in kinesiology, was a dominant leader on the Lady Cougar Basketball squad throughout the 2004-05 season. She led the team to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row and an overall record of 21-9.
The Killeen, Texas native moved into seventh place in steals in Lady Cougar career history and finished eighth in NCAA Division I with 102 steals during the 2004-05 campaign. Overstreet also finished 20th in the nation with 170 assists and led the Lady Cougars in both categories all season.
Almazan, who was a communications major and has recorded a 3.51 cumulative grade point average, was one of the Cougars' leading divers throughout the 2004-05 season. The Mexico City, Mexico, native earned a place at the 2005 NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season in March and captured All-America honors on the 3-meter springboard and platform.
She helped lead the Cougars to a Top 20 finish at the NCAA Championships and was named the Diver of the Meet for the second consecutive season at the C-USA Championships at UH's own Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
