HOUSTON - University of Houston junior outfielder Travis Tully and junior southpaw Matt Farrington were named to the All-Conference USA First Team on Tuesday in a release from the league office.
The two First-Teamers were joined by junior teammate Kevin Roberts who garnered All-Conference USA Second Team honors.
All three Cougars open the 2005 C-USA Tournament presented by PowerAde when they meet No. 4 East Carolina at 9 a.m., Wednesday, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
That game can be heard live on KGBC 1540 AM or on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Fans also can follow play-by-play action by clicking on the "Live Stats" link on the schedule at www.UHCougars.com.
Entering Wednesday's opening game at the 2005 C-USA Tournament presented by PowerAde, Tully leads the Cougars and ranks among the C-USA individual leaders with a .365 batting average. The Richmond, Texas, native also added a team-best 17 doubles, 77 hits, four home runs and 20 RBIs.
Tully, who was one of only three players to start all 55 games this season, performed even better in C-USA games only, posting a league-best .430 batting average in those games. It was his second consecutive All-Conference USA honor after being named to the league's Second Team in 2004.
Farrington garnered his first All-Conference USA award after emerging as the ace of the Cougar pitching staff. The Sugar Land, Texas, native tops all UH hurlers with a 3.31 ERA and seven wins and tossed a shutout at C-USA rival Memphis in the conference opener for both teams on March 18.
Roberts, who was the Cougars' lone selection to the 2004 Conference USA All-Tournament Team, established himself as one of the team's most consistent performers at the plate and on the mound. He ranked second on the team with a .356 batting average and topped all players with nine home runs.
On the mound, Roberts, who will toe the rubber against No. 4 East Carolina in the C-USA Tournament opener for both teams Wednesday morning, has assembled a 6-3 record with a 3.59 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 77.2 innings. His .240 opposing batting average topped all Cougar pitchers.
Like Tully, Roberts was one of only three Cougar players to start all 55 games to date in 2005.
Tulane DH/UTIL Micah Owings was named the Player of the Year, while TCU righthander Lance Broadway was honored as the league's Pitcher of the Year. Tulane infielder Brad Emaus was named the Freshman of the Year, and Green Wave skipper Rick Jones was recognized as the Keith LeClair Coach of the Year.
