HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that 31 current and former student-athletes are set to participate in commencement exercises on Friday and Saturday.
The track and field program paces the field with 11 members symbolically walking across the stage this weekend. Since these athletes are in the midst of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field championships being hosted at the Carl Lewis International Track Complex/Tom Tellez Track, each might find it difficult to compete and graduate at the same time.
The track graduates include Shayla Bowman, Nichole Brundage, Jason Edwards, Crystal Freeman, Milton Manson, Veronica Ramirez, Jasmin Jackson, Ron Veillon, Tinisha Wesley, Tim Whitaker and Brandon Womack.
Next in numbers is football, which boasts nine 2005 graduates. Led by Stephen Cucci, a recent free agent signing of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, the gridiron list also includes Dustin Bell, Lance Everson, Carl Francis, Kendrick Goss, Brian Hodges, Matt Mattox, Jimmy McClary and Willie Thomas III.
The rest of the Spring 2005 graduates include baseball's Nick Bott and Gene Flores, Anne Gasser and Nikki Hawkins of women's soccer, the men's basketball tandem of Bryan Shelton and Andre Owens and the women's basketball duo of Emily Fryters and Nicole Oliver. The following sports have one graduate each: women's tennis (Sarah Flood), women's swimming and diving (Yulia Pakhalina) and softball (Lindsay Vanover.)
