Skender's Grand Slam Can't Save Softball

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A grand slam by Jenliee Skender in the seventh wasn't enough for the University of Houston softball team as the Cougars fell in their third and perhaps final game against Conference USA foe Louisville in a 7-5 Sunday afternoon game in Kentucky.
The Cougars (26-26, 9-12) went through three pitchers in the ballgame while Louisville (36-16, 17-4) senior Aja Sherman pitched the Cardinals to the victory.
Houston senior Kristen Glowacz continued to add to her stellar career at Houston, as she became the new iron man of the team, playing in her program record 234th game and surpassing former Cougar Arelis Ferreris' mark of 233 career contests.
Houston's lone run of the game came in the first inning after Nesloney walked to start off the inning and then stole second with Glowacz at the plate. Facing a 3-1 count with one out in the inning, the third baseman hit safely into the left centerfield gap for a double that would score Nesloney.
The Cardinals, who were held scoreless in the bottom of the first, went on a 7-0 run over the next five innings to go into the top of the seventh with Houston trailing 7-1.
In the seventh, Houston managed to load the bases with a single by Brooke Johnson, followed by a pair of walks to Nesloney and Glowacz.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Skender crushed a 2-1 pitch into deep centerfield for a Houston grand slam, the first of Skender's career.
However, the Cougars were unable to manufacture any more runs and the Cardinals took the game 7-5 on Senior Day for Louisville.
The Cougars return home to close out the 2005 regular season hosting UAB in the final C-USA series of the season. Sunday, May 8, will be Senior Day for the Cougars, with the team biding farewell to five athletes.
