HOUSTON - This Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, the Houston softball team returns to Cougar Softball Field to host a three-game series against Conference USA rival Saint Louis as the Cougars look to improve in the league standings.
After Wednesday's twin bill sweep over Sam Houston State, the Cougars stand at an even 20-20 on the year and head into the conference matchup with a league record of 3-6 and a sixth-place standing.
On Wednesday, despite having just two hits in two game against the Bearkats, senior Kristen Glowacz made each hit hurt by sending them over the fence to increase her season home run total to a C-USA-best 13 bombs.
With the homers, Glowacz became the all-time C-USA home run leader with 43 career long balls, surpassing DePaul's Saskia Roberson's mark of 42. Glowacz is also the conference leader for career RBI with 162 runs batted in to date.
It will remain to be seen who will win out as the career leader in the two categories as Glowacz will have to continue to battle Roberson through the rest of the season to stay atop the statistical categories.
The Billikens enter the weekend with a 4-8 record in C-USA and a 13-17 overall mark where they are 5-4 on the road, and winners in five of their last 10 outings.
Adrienne May leads SLU with her .432 batting average in 88 at-bats this season. May, also is the C-USA leader in batting average, has registered 22 runs on 38 hits and has eight RBI thus far in 2005.
The rest of the Billikens are hitting .229 on the season with just seven combined home runs on the year. Having nobody to hit the ball deep, Saint Louis scores by placing runners on base with singles and then stringing together hits. The Cougars will need to be ready to field well and look for some help from the pitching staff.
Leading the way in the circle for the Billikens has been Lorena Floccari, who has shouldered much of the pitching duties for Saint Louis. Floccari enters the weekend with a 3.41 ERA, a 9-10 record, has thrown129.1 innings, given up 151 hits, 63 earned runs, 14 home runs and struck out 85 batters.
Last season the Cougars swept the conference series between the two teams in St. Louis, Mo., to improve their all-time record against the Billikens to 9-2, and will be looking to do the same as they play host this season.
Saturday's twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Cougars Softball Field on the main campus of the University of Houston. Sunday's action is set to get underway with a noon first pitch. Admission to all games is free.
