Softball Swept In Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISIT, Texas - In their first appearance in Corpus Christi, Texas, the University of Houston softball team was swept by the Islanders of Texas A&M at Corpus Christi in a Saturday afternoon twin bill.
The Cougars fell 2-1 in a heartbreaking Game 1, as Houston led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh but didn't manage to hold on. Game 2 saw the Islanders' Sarah Pauly record her 14th shutout of the season and improve her personal record to 26-3, while helping her team to a 30-6 record with the 1-0 win.
Houston's losses extends the its losing streak to eight straight losses, the longest losing streak since the 2001 inaugural season when the Cougars dropped seven games from Feb. 17-24.
Senior Michelle Keith gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in Game 1 after she reached base on a double down the leftfield line to lead off the fifth inning.
Junior Brandi Clark fouled out in the next at-bat, but in an attempt to throw Keith out at second, the Islanders' centerfielder came into cover second and missed the throw and allowed Keith to score.
Houston's sophomore pitcher Carla Kennimer, had a no-hitter going through the first five innings, and a one-hitter heading into the bottom of the second with Houston holding on to a 1-0 lead. In the seventh, the Islanders placed two runners on base, and with two outs and a 1-2 count, the Islanders' pinch hitter brought in both base runners with a double to right field.
The double stole the game from the Cougars and gave Texas A&M-CC a 2-1 victory.
In Game 2, the Islanders' used a single RBI by Crystal Russell that drove in Erica Armenta in the fifth inning to claim the slim 1-0 win, and secure the series sweep over Houston.
The Cougars head to Huntsville, Texas, to face Sam Houston State in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6, beginning at 4 p.m.
