HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The University of Houston baseball team look to return to its winning ways at 2 p.m., Tuesday when it meets area-rival Sam Houston State at Holleman Field.
Fans should note that Tuesday's game time recently was moved up from the original schedule as construction on SHSU's new baseball stadium continues.
UH (15-20), which brings a six-game winning streak over SHSU into Tuesday's contest, will be looking to sweep the season series after taking a 4-0 win over the Bearkats on March 8 at Cougar Field.
The Cougars come into the game after dropping the final two games of a Conference USA series at No. 1 Tulane last weekend at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.
The game can be heard live on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Fans also can follow play-by-play action by clicking on the "Live Stats" link at www.UHCougars.com.
Freshman righthander Aaron Brown will make his first collegiate start Tuesday afternoon at area-rival Sam Houston State. This season, Brown has appeared in 10 games out of the bullpen and compiled 10 strikeouts with a 9.00 ERA in nine innings of work. In his last outing, League City, Texas, native allowed one run off a hit and two walks in 0.1 innings of relief at No. 15 Baylor on April 5. However, he did not pick up a decision.
At 6-feet, 6-inches tall, Brown ranks as the tallest Cougar on the team in 2005 and is the tallest Cougar player since pitcher Bryan Moore measured in at 6-8 during the 1999 season.
This will be the first time that Brown has faced Sam Houston State.
Sophomore infielder Brad Lincoln continues to lead the Cougars and rank among the Conference USA leaders with a .375 batting average. Sophomore shortstop Dustin Kingsbury tops the Cougars with four home runs and 31 RBIs and brings a career-best eight-game hitting streak into Tuesday's game.
For the fourth consecutive season, the Cougars will meet area rival Sam Houston State on the baseball diamond. SHSU owns a 71-66 (.514) record in the all-time series, which began in 1947 and has been played at least once every year (with the exception of 2001) since 1983.
Earlier this season, the Cougars claimed a 4-0 win on March 8 at Cougar Field in a game, which marked the end of a season-long seven-game homestand. It was the Cougars' sixth consecutive win against the Bearkats entering Tuesday's game.
Sam Houston State owns a 27-21 (.563) all-time record against the Cougars in Huntsville, Texas. However, the Cougars can boast of the most recent success after taking a 7-3 win on March 25, 2003. The two teams have split each of the last four games at the Bearkats' home facility, but UH is 6-2 (.750) over the last eight games in Huntsville, Texas.
SHSU (14-22-2) comes into the game after losing two of three to Southland Conference rival Northwestern State last weekend in Huntsville. Junior infielder Isaias Garcia leads the Bearkats in all three Triple Crown categories with a .331 batting average, 10 home runs and 34 RBIs.
Sophomore righthander Zach Golden (0-0, 3.86 ERA) or senior southpaw Brian Martin (0-0, 8.10 ERA) were slated to start on the mound Tuesday.
