Tennis Squeezes Past Mavericks

ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team used a pair of 8-4 wins in the doubles pairings to clinch a 4-3 victory in Arlington, Texas against in-state rival UTA.
With the win, the Cougars avenge last season's 5-2 loss to the Mavericks and claim their tightest margin of victory this season in the 4-3 victory.
Houston also improves its season record to 12-6, and is close to eclipsing last season's mark of 15-10 before facing its first Conference USA opponent.
UTA managed to come away with victories at the No. 1-3 spots to start off the match, but Houston responded by claiming wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots, as well as a default win at No. 6.
Senior Biljana Dimovska fell at the No. 1 spot to No. 90 nationally ranked Pavla Mesterova, 6-4, 6-0, while freshman Brianna Bateup was defeated 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, and senior Diana Martin was the only player to go three sets in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss.
However, juniors Yolandi Terblanche and Kami Miller each pulled off wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots as Terblance downed Anete Rozkalne 6-3, 6-2 and Miller defeated Gretel Hach 6-0, 6-2. Picking up the default win at No. 6 was freshman Tiffany McLoughlin.
Heading into the doubles portion of the match, the two teams were tied up at 3-3, and that is where the Cougars took over.
The tandem of Dimovska and Terblance improved their record to 9-1 on the year with an 8-4 win over Mesterova and Daniela Novakova, while Martin and Miller also made quick work of Monika Peciulionyte and Rozkalin to secure the doubles point for Houston and give the Cougars the 4-3 win.
Houston next heads up to Fort Worth to face the No. 20 Frogs of TCU. The match will mark the beginning of C-USA play for both teams, and will mark the second highest ranked opponent the Cougars have faced this season.
Action is set to get underway at noon on Saturday, April 2.
