HOUSTON - After hosting four straight weeks of tournaments, the University of Houston softball team's schedule resumes as the Cougars play host to in-state rival No. 11 Texas A&M in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday evening at Cougar Softball Field.
The Cougars and Aggies have split the all-time series with one another at 2-2, which includes last season's sweep of then-ranked No. 15 A&M by Houston in College Station.
Houston, winners of 10 of its last 11 outings, holds a season record of 3-6 against ranked opponents after sweeping No. 16 Nebraska last weekend and is now 13-10 on the year.
Cougar third baseman Kristen Glowacz has been on a tear as of late. The senior out of Katy, Texas, was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week for the second straight week and also received Co-USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week honors on Monday for her monstrous play last week.
Over the weekend, Glowacz air mailed five bombs out of the park, three of which came back-to-back-to-back against the Huskers, hit .667, drove in 11 runs and set or tied five Cougar records along the way.
Also earning recognition for her standout play last week was freshman pitcher Angel Shamblin, who was named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week.
Shamblin (5-2) went 2-0 against TSU and Nebraska, allowing just two earned runs and recording a 1.16 ERA with nine strikeouts in 12 innings of work.
Texas A&M (21-2) comes to town riding a five-game winning streak since dropping its second game of the year in a 9-1 loss to No. 23 Long Beach. However, the Aggies have a 10-0 shutout of No. 12 Washington and a convincing 5-2 victory over then-ranked No. 1 California to their credit this season.
Pitcher Amanda Scarboroug has been unbeatable in the circle with an 11-0 record, a 0.32 ERA, 62 strikeouts, 25 hits and just three earned runs to her resume. She is also second on the team in batting with a .426 average on 26 hits in 61 appearances with 18 runs, four homeruns and 20 RBI. As a crew, the Aggie pitchers have a 1.26 ERA, 135 Ks, and 25 earned runs as opposed to opponents' 114 earned runs.
At the plate, the team is loaded with hitters. A total of eight players are hitting above .300 with three of them above .400. Leading the team in hitting is pitcher/3B Megan Gibson and her .446 average with 10 homers, 25 hits, 24 runs and 27 RBI. She also has a recorded of 4-1 record in the circle with a 2.41 ERA.
Action begins at the Cougar Softball Field on the main campus of the University of Houston, on Thursday, March 10, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
