LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Houston golf team opens its 2005 spring season Monday when it competes at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
The Cougars join a competitive field on the 7,002-yard, par-72 course, including Arkansas State, Colorado, Kansas, Kent State, Louisville, Missouri, North Texas, Rice, Southeastern Louisiana, SMU, Texas State, Texas Tech and Tulsa and host Louisiana-Lafayette.
The 54-hole event begins with 36 holes on Monday before wrapping up with the final 54 holes Tuesday morning.
This will be the first of five regular-season tournaments for the Cougars during the spring season, including four in the month of March alone.
Sophomores Pablo Acuna and Ricky Romano as well as junior Zach Mowbray are scheduled to be in the Cougar lineup Monday morning. Those three Cougar linksters have been a constant in the Cougar lineup this season, competing in each of the first five fall tournaments in 2004.
In addition, junior Kevin Newman and freshman Jordan Irwin are slated to compete for the Cougars this week. It will be only the second tournament for Newman but the fifth for Irwin in 2004-05.
Romano leads the Cougars with a 72.7 scoring average, more than a stroke better than Mowbray and Acuna who are tied at 73.9.
Monday's tournament will be the first event for the Cougars since the team tied for sixth place at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Nov. 4-5.
At that event, Romano tied for sixth place individually to lead the Cougars. It was the fifth consecutive tournament in which Romano finished among UH's Top Two individual leaders.
