HOUSTON - University of Houston junior southpaw Matt Farrington became the first Cougar to receive a weekly honor from the Conference USA office this season when he was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Farrington recorded his fourth consecutive win to open the 2005 season with an impressive four-hit shutout at Memphis on March 18 to open the C-USA season for both teams.
It was his first shutout and the first by an individual Cougar hurler since teammate Brad Lincoln accomplished the feat at C-USA rival UAB on April 3, 2004.
The Sugar Land, Texas, native struck out seven and did not allow any baserunners beyond second base after the third inning. Farrington also retired the last eight hitters and 19 of the 22 last 22 batters that he faced in the win.
It was his first C-USA Pitcher of the Week award during his collegiate career.
Louisville's J.T. LaFountain and Tulane's Nathan Southard shared the C-USA Hitter of the Week honors.
Farrington and his Cougar teammates return to action at 7 p.m., Tuesday, as they play host to No. 14 Texas A&M at Cougar Field. That game can be heard live on KLVL 1480 AM or on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action.
