CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman Barbie Love posted a two-hitter win in Houston's 9-2 victory over Charlotte in North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Phillips Complex to complete the series sweep of the 49ers.
Love threw through six innings, allowing no earned runs, with two hits and six strikeouts for her second win of the year.
As a team, the Cougars were knocking the ball around all afternoon with 14 hits from nine different players, including a 3-for-4 performance with three runs and two RBI from junior Brandi Clark.
With one out in the first inning, senior Kristen Glowacz put the Cougars on the board with an RBI single that drove in fellow senior Kim Nesloney who reached base on a single to lead of the inning.
Batting in the leadoff position in the second inning, Clark reached first on a single, second off a sacrifice bunt, and reached third after a wild pitch. With a runner on the corner, junior Brooke Johnson delivered a single into left center, plating Clark.
Before the inning was out, Johnson came home when freshman Dru Daniels blasted a shot at the Charlotte shortstop that couldn't be handled and allowed Johnson to score the run putting Houston up 3-0 after two innings.
The Cougars continued to pile on the points in the third with a four-run inning with a single by senior Michelle Keith and back-to-back doubles by sophomore Jamie Adams and Daniels.
Daniels' double drove in both Keith and Adams, followed by runs from Clark and Johnson to close out the inning with Houston leading 7-0.
Once again looking to close out the 49ers with the run rule, Houston posted two runs in the fifth, and led Charlotte 9-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Facing the end of the game, Charlotte strung together a series of hits to recorded two runs and force at least one more inning.
However, the Cougars refused to allow another 49er run, and closed out the game with junior Crystal Briscoe in the circle retiring the Charlotte batters with back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to Keith at first base.
Houston resumes C-USA next week with a series matchup with DePaul at Cougar Softball Field on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22 and 23.
