Houston Wins 4x800-Meter Relay At 54th Annual TSU Relays

Houston, Texas- - Houston's tandem of Sesar Figueroa, Chris White, Alex Winstel and Andy Morris opened the 2005 outdoor track and field season with a victory in the men's 4x800-meter relay race at the 54th Annual Texas Relays on Friday night at the Rice University Track and Field Complex. The Cougars beat relay teams from TSU, Grambling State, Prairie View A&M and Southern University to win the race.
In addition, to the relay team winning its race, Andrew Carruthers and Ronald Broadnax qualified for Saturday's final in the men's 110-meter hurdles, while Sam Fobbs qualified for the finals of the men's 400-meter hurdles. Carruthers had the second-fastest preliminary time in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40 seconds, while Broadnax had the fifth-fastest time with 15.01 seconds. Fobbs finished with the fourth-fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.87 seconds.
In the women's division freshman Christa Coppin cleared 3.50 meters in the pole vault to finish in fourth place in the first outdoor event of her collegiate career. Teammate Ashley Ligon finished in fifth place after clearing 3.20 meters.
Tinisha Wesley opened her senior outdoor campaign with a fifth-place finish in the women's javelin with a throw of 37.84 meters.
In addition, Alicia Cave qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles after posting the fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.45 seconds. Caresir Hamilton also qualified for the finals after she had the eighth-fastest time with 15.47 seconds.
