Golf in Fourth Place after First Day at Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. - Freshman Jordan Irwin fired a career-best 69 in the second round on the way to an even-par 142 to stand in a tie for fourth place after the first day of the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club.
After shooting a 73 in the opening round, Irwin rebounded in the afternoon session to better his previous best by two strokes. The Calgary, Alberta, native tied with USF's Federico Mautone and was only one stroke behind first-day leaders Brandon Pace (East Carolina), William Thompson (Virginia Commonwealth) and Stuart Carrihill (Charleston Southern).
As a team, the Cougars stood in a tie with Conference USA rival East Carolina for fourth place with a team score of 17-over-par 585. USF finished in first place after the first 36 holes with a team score of 579, while host South Carolina-Aiken was second at 580. Charleston Southern was in third place at 581.
Sophomore Ricky Romano, a member of the 2004 Conference USA All-Freshmen Team, was tied for 11th place after shooting a 145. Other Cougar linksters in action were Pablo Acuna (149, t-26th), Kevin Newman (150, t-31st) and Zach Mowbray (157, t-57th).
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes, scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. (CST) Tuesday.
