HOUSTON - The first perfect game in Houston Softball history and a one-hitter win in Game 2, handed Houston a two-game sweep over the Lions of Arkansas Pine Bluff Monday afternoon at the Cougar Softball Field.
Freshman Angel Shamblin (6-2) recorded the historic perfect game in five innings of work in the Game 1 of the twin bill for the Cougars and Lions.
In that first game, Shamblin provided the majority of the defense as she had a part in 13 of the 15 outs during the game. Shamblin recorded a career high 10 strikeouts, while forcing three other batters to ground out to her.
In the second game, it was sophomore Carl Kennimer (5-3) who picked up the win with a one-hit performance on the afternoon in four innings, before freshman Barbie Love came in in relief to pick up her second save of the season without giving up a single hit.
After the first three pitches of the first game, Houston had already taken a 2-0 lead.
On the first pitch, senior Kim Nesloney fired a single into left field and then stole second base, on the second pitch.
The third pitch of the ball game put Houston on the board as junior Brandi Clark put the ball over the centerfield fence for a two-run homer and the lead.
Heading into the fifth inning the Cougars led the game 4-0 needing four more runs to enforce the run rule, and picked up the runs with just one out in the inning.
With two runners on base, senior Jenilee Skender cleared the bases with a doubled down the right field line. Two batters later, sophomore Jamie Adams hit her own bases-clearing double to win the game as Skender and senior Michelle Keith, who reached on a walk, came home to give Houston the 8-0 win.
Throughout Game 2, the Cougars managed to string together hits to build a 7-2 lead on the Lions heading into the seventh inning.
Love, who recorded three innings of work with no hits, no runs and X strikeouts, put the Lions down in short order with two strikeouts and one ground out to end the game.
The Cougars take to the field again this week on Wednesday as they host in-state rival UTA at Cougar Softball Field at 5 and 7 p.m.
