HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball looks to return to its winning ways when it plays host to No. 2 LSU this weekend in a three-game series at Cougar Field.
The series begins at 7 p.m., Friday, continues at 3 p.m., Saturday and wraps up at 1 p.m., Sunday.
All three games can be heard live on the radio or over the Internet with former Cougar players Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Friday's game can be heard on KLVL 1480 AM with both Saturday's and Sunday's games being broadcast on KGBC 1540 AM.
In addition, fans also can follow play-by-play action by clicking on the "Gametracker" link on the schedule at www.UHCougars.com.
This marks the sixth consecutive season that the Cougars and Tigers will hook up on the baseball diamond. However, it will be the first time since the 2002 season and only the second time since 1994 that the Tigers have visited Houston.
The Cougars own a 19-15 advantage in the all-time series, but the Tigers can claim the most recent success with wins in three of the last four games.
In 2002, the Cougars rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take a wild 12-11 win over the Tigers in the series finale. That series drew more than 11,000 people through the front gates at Cougar Field, the largest regular-season series in the facility's history.
Tickets are still available for all three games this weekend, but fans are encouraged to but their tickets in advance as UH Ticket Office administrators are anticipating sellouts.
The Cougars enter this weekend's series after dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 7 Rice on Tuesday in Game Two of the annual Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series. It was the third one-run loss for the Cougars in 2005 and put UH down 0-2 in the Series.
Junior southpaw Matt Farrington is slated to get the start in the series opener against the Tigers. This season, the Sugar Land, Texas, native is 1-0 with a 6.0 ERA and seven strikeouts in nine innings of work. Friday's game will be the first time that he has faced the Tigers from the mound.
Junior outfielder Travis Tully leads the team with a .379 batting average, while sophomore shortstop Dustin Kingsbury and junior infielder Matt Farrington are tops with seven RBIs apiece.
The Tigers (7-0) come into the series after sweeping Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas-Little Rock in Baton Rouge, La., last weekend.
Senior southpaw Lane Mestepey is scheduled to get the start for the Tigers in the series opener. This season, Mestepey has compiled a 2-0 record with nine strikeouts and a 0.66 ERA in 13.2 innings of work.
Junior first baseman Will Harris leads LSU with a .476 batting average, while senior outfielder Nick Stavinoha is tops with two home runs and 10 RBIs.
