HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team looks to even up the annual Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series at 4 p.m., Tuesday when they meet crosstown rival and eighth-ranked Rice in Game Two of the Series at Reckling Park.
The Owls grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Series after taking a 7-6 win in 10 innings over UH on Feb. 15 at Cougar Field.
The game can be heard live on KLVL 1480 AM with former Cougar players Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. The pregame show is slated to begin 15 minutes before first pitch.
All Cougar Baseball games are available over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com. Fans also can follow the action by clicking on the "Gametracker" link at www.UHCougars.com.
The Cougars (2-5) come into the game on the heels of a disappointing 18-12 loss to Pepperdine in the series finale on Sunday at Cougar Field. In that game, UH put 12 runs off 18 hits, including 10 for extra bases with three home runs, on the scoreboard but were unable to slow the Pepperdine offense which rapped out 22 hits.
In that game, junior infielder Matt Farrington set a new career high with four hits, and freshman outfielder Kori Williams set a UH season-high with five RBIs, thanks in part to a second-inning grand slam in only his third collegiate plate appearance.
Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Brad Lincoln leads the Cougars with a .375 batting average and is followed closely by outfielders Travis Tully at .360 and Jake Stewart at .357. Farrington and sophomore shortstop Dustin Kingsbury are tied for the team lead with seven RBIs apiece.
Junior righthander Kevin Roberts is scheduled to take the hill for the second time this season against the Owls. In his last outing against Rice, Roberts allowed four runs off four hits with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings but did not pick up the decision.
This season, Roberts has compiled a 7.71 ERA with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
Rice (7-1) comes into the game after an 8-2 win over Lamar on Sunday at Reckling Park. The Owls struck for six runs in the eighth inning to claim the victory.
Righthander Ryne Tacker is slated to make the start on the mound for the Cougars. This season, Tacker has compiled a 5.40 ERA with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief.
Danny Lehmann leads the Owls in all three Triple Crown categories with a .387 batting average, three home runs and 11 RBIs.
