HOUSTON - Houston came away with two big wins on Friday as the team upset No. 11 Baylor 4-3 and put away Kentucky 10-0 in five innings during the first day of the Crowne Plaza Classic at Cougar Softball Field.
After beginning the season with seven-of-nine games against team ranked in the top 12, the Cougars picked up their first win over a ranked opponent in the No. 11 Baylor Bears. The Cougars is also undefeated when facing unranked teams after their win over the Wildcats and hold a 3-6 on the year.
Pitchers Angel Shamblin and Crystal Briscoe picked up the wins for Houston as both hurlers went the distance in their respective games.
Shamblin, a freshman who is now 2-1 as a starter, picked up five strikeouts while allowing a mere eight hits and three runs to get the win over the Bears. Briscoe picked up the team's first shutout of 2005 as she and the Cougars blanked the Wildcats with Briscoe giving up just three hits while picking up six strikeouts and no runs.
Against Baylor the Cougars fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but came back strong in the bottom of the second to place three runs on the board and take the lead that would remain theirs at 3-1.
Houston began the scoring in the inning after Shamblin singled up the middle and then moved to second on a Brandi Clark bunt that landed both runners safely on base. Freshman Courtney Spittler came in to pinch run for Shamblin at second base, and a passed ball advanced both Clark and Spittler up to second and third, respectively.
The passed ball set up a Michelle Keith single that brought home Spittler and Clark to give Houston a 2-1 lead.
Later in that same inning, junior Brooke Johnson reached first on a fielder's choice. Next, senior Kim Nesloney singled to advance Johnson to second and later home off an errant Baylor play and give Houston the 3-1 advantage.
In the fourth inning Houston scored the winning run as both Johnson and senior Michelle Keith reached base on singes. With Keith on third and Johnson on first, the tandem successfully completed a double steel that advanced Johnson to second and Keith to steal home.
Against Kentucky, the Cougars needed only five innings to finish the games as the Cougars put runs up in the first, third and fourth innings on their way to the 10-0 blowout.
Up 2-0 in the third, senior Kristen Glowacz plated freshman Dru Daniels after Daniels was walked to begin the inning. With Daniels on first, Glowacz blasted a two-run bomb to put Houston up 4-0, but the team was just getting warmed up.
Piling on seven runs in the inning, senior Jeanie Davis scored, Gonzalez scored with the bases loaded on a walk from third, Daniels doubled to clear the bases and brought in junior Brandi Clark, Spittler, and junior Lindsay Vanover.
Up 9-0 in the fourth, Houston added another run by Davis off a wild pitch and sealed the game at 10-0 in a five-inning-mercy-rule game.
