HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team looks to build on its momentum when it plays host to No. 10 Rice in Game One of the annual Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series at 4 p.m., Tuesday, at Cougar Field.
The game can be heard live on KGBC 1540 AM with former Cougar players Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. The pregame show is slated to begin at 3:45 p.m. All Cougar Baseball game are available over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com. The Cougars come into the game on the heels of an impressive 6-1 win over No. 9 Texas A&M to close out their stay at the Minute Maid Park College Classic on Sunday.
In that game, junior southpaw Matt Farrington limited the Aggies to only one run off four hits with six strikeouts in a career-best seven innings of work. Offensively, junior outfielder Travis Tully blasted a two-run homer - his first collegiate tater - to give the Cougars the lead for good in the third inning, and junior infielder Kevin Roberts tied a UH single-game record with two triples to lead the UH offense.
Sophomore Brad Lincoln joined Farrington on the All-Tournament Team after hitting safely in, scoring at least run, knocking in at least one run and blasting one double in each of the Cougars' first three games.
Sophomore outfielder Jake Stewart is second on the team with a .400 batting average and leads the Cougars with an impressive .571 on-base percentage after drawing four walks with no strikeouts as the team's leadoff hitter.
Head coach Rayner Noble announced Monday that freshman righthander Aaron Brown or Roberts was scheduled to start on the mound for the Cougars on Tuesday. Roberts threw one shutout inning of relief with a pair of strikeouts against the Aggies. Brown, a 46th-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2004 amateur draft, would make his collegiate debut if he is chosen for the start.
This marks the 34th consecutive season that the Cougars will meet Rice on the baseball diamond. Although the series began in 1948, it has been continued uninterrupted with at least two games played between the two teams every year since the 1972 season.
The series is tied at 64-64 after the Owls won three of four games to win the Silver Glove Trophy for the sixth time in the seven-year history of the Series.
Rice comes into the game with a 3-1 record after winning two of three games at the Minute Maid Park College Classic. Lance Pendleton leads the Owls with a .375 average, while Danny Lehmann is tops with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Righthander Eddie Degerman, who has not pitched to date this season, is scheduled to make the start on the mound for the Owls.
