HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team signed three players to National Letters of Intent during the recent early signing period, head coach Kyla Holas announced Monday.
"They are a small class, but they fill in spots that we needed to add players to," Holas said. "Each year we do a good job of getting better recruits right out of high school."
Samantha Cummings will join the Cougars from Shepherd High School where she was named District Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore followed up by a District MVP last season.
"Samantha is a hard thrower who is similar to Crystal (Briscoe) who has done some phenomenal things for us," Holas said. "She (Samantha) is one of those kids who is going to work hard and is going to blow the ball by you."
Lara Lang heads to Houston from Mayde Creek High School in Katy. As a sophomore, Lang was named All-District First Team. She was also recruited by Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Purdue.
"Lara is a quality outfielder that comes close to those who remember Kim Nesloney," Holas said. "She was recruited by some other quality programs and we're excited to have her."
Amanda Grote is the lone junior college transfer of the bunch. She comes to UH from Blinn Community College where her squad finished 40-15-1 and received a No. 13 ranking in the NJCAA a season ago.
"We are really excited about having Amanda coming in," Holas said. "She has a great arm and has all the tools that a true shortstop possesses."
Houston opens the 2006 regular season against Oregon in the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational at the Cougar Softball Stadium on Feb. 10. First pitch is slated for 4pm.
