Houston, Texas- - The three high school signees include Quin'Shundolyn McPherson of Alief Taylor High School, Brandon Hubbard of Texas A&M Consolidated High School and Wesley Bray of Cy Fair High School. The junior college transfers are sprinters Willie Hordge and Ivory Williams of Butler Community College.
McPherson was a member of the 2005 World Youth Team that competed in Morocco and has recorded career-bests of 40' 4.50" in the triple jump, 19' 8" in the long jump and Burrell thinks she can help the Lady Cougars in the sprints as well.
"I look for Quin'Shundolyn to be a triple threat for us and make an immediate impact on our women's team," Burrell said. "She is the fastest jumper since we signed Jasmin Jackson (2005 C-USA long jump champion) and will add to our outstanding tradition in the jumps."
Hubbard is a discus and shot put thrower who has thrown the discus over 171 feet and the shot put nearly 58 feet in his career at A&M Consolidated.
"He will be able to help us replace Jonathan Reeves and allow us to remain strong in the throwing areas at the Conference USA Championships," Burrell said. "I think that he can prove himself at the national level as well." Bray is a decathlete from Clear Creek High School and scored over 6,200 points to qualify for the national championships last season. "He has a perfect build for a decathlete as he is 6'1" tall and weighs 150 pounds," Burrell said. "He will be a good competitor for us and continues our long line of successful athletes from Cy Fair High School such as former C-USA champion high jumper Jeff Mueller and a NCAA qualifier in the discus, Allie Booker."
The Cougars also signed Hordge and Williams, two of the top junior sprinters in the world coming out of high school two years ago, but have to meet NCAA academic standards before enrolling at Houston.
"The have to overcome a few hurdles to get here," Burrell said. "Both are known worldwide and they bring instant credibility to our program. However, they have to overcome some obstacles before they can enroll at Houston.
"If they do make, they will strengthen a area that is already strong on our men's team in the sprints. We still have some holes on both teams we need to fill in the spring, but this is a good start to what can be an outstanding recruiting class for us."
