HOUSTON - Behind 18 kills on a career-best .432 attack percentage from All-Freshman performer Justine Farmer, the University of Houston volleyball team rolled into the semifinals for the second time in three seasons with a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over SMU on Friday night.
Farmer also fired in a Houston C-USA Tournament record five aces in the quarterfinal win over the Mustangs.
"It was important for us to come out strong," Farmer said. "This really helps our confidence for the rest of the tournament."
The Cougars will now face Tulane (5-15, 2-13 C-USA) in the semifinals. The Green Wave have been the Cinderella story over the tournament pulling a pair of five-game upsets over No. 6 Rice and No. 3 Tulsa.
The Cougars have already beaten Tulane twice in four games during the regular season, but Walton knows this a different Green Wave squad he is facing.
"I said going into this tournament that Tulane would surprise folks," Walton said. "They missed nearly a month early on and are finally getting comfortable with each other. They have nothing to lose."
First serve against the Green Wave is slated for 7pm. UH students get in free to the C-USA Tournament by showing their Cougar 1 Card.
The winner of the C-USA Tournament secures an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships that begin on campus sites Dec. 1 and 2.
