Houston, Texas - eWhen the University of Houston football team lines up against Southern Miss this Sunday, November 13 at 4:00 p.m. on John O'Quinn Field, they meet one of the most successful, if not the most successful programs in Conference USA.
"They have a history of being real good not in just the last 10 years, but the last 20," Houston head coach Art Briles said. "Throughout that time span they have won a lot of games, a lot of close games. Through that comes a belief in what could happen.
"That is where we are striving to get to and I believe we are right on the edge of being in that category. When you play a team like them, you have to play your game, maintain your composure and make plays on both sides of the ball."
Southern Miss enters the game having won four of its last five games, and rank among the nation's top scoring teams despite ranking ninth among C-USA teams in total offense.
"They are very good up front on the offensive line and are known for always having good defenses," Briles said. "They are very efficient on offense and (Jeff) Almond does a great job of conducting their offense so they are not the type of team that beats themselves.
"When you are on defense you have to get them in nickel situations and you have to be productive on offense. Their special teams are also good so they make you have play well in all phases of the game. We have to play a clean, efficient football game and be a well oiled machine on both sides of the ball and special teams. That is our approach this week."
Sunday's game is the first of the final three home games during the 2005 season. After the Southern Miss game, the Cougars play host to SMU on November 19 at 5:00 p.m., and Rice on November 26 at 3:00 p.m.
The game also is the first of two games that were rescheduled following the Greater Houston area evacuations for Hurricane Rita. Those fans wishing to attend either or both games should note the following ticket exchange policy.
Fans who purchased tickets for either the Southern Miss or SMU games may do one of the following: 1. Keep the current tickets, as they will be valid for the new rescheduled games. 2. Exchange your tickets for one of the remaining home football games. The homecoming game.
