Houston, Texas - After spending this week trying to get back to their regular routine, the University of Houston football team will travel through some "uncharted" waters when the Cougars play Tulane this Saturday in Lafayette, La.
"It's been nice this week getting back into our normal routine," Houston head coach Art Briles said. "We had some good weather in Tulsa, but the weather has been nice here and we have been able to return to our regular routine. Our guys really needed to do that."
The Cougars evacuate to Tulsa on September 23 before Hurricane Rita struck the Texas-Louisiana coast. Houston practiced there for a week before defeating the Golden Hurricane, 30-23, last Saturday night.
"Being on the road really helped pull us together because we really didn't have a choice," Briles said. "I knew that we would come out of it really liking each other or really disliking each other.
"Fortunately, we hung together and made the best of an uncomfortable situation at times and became a stronger team because of it. I was proud of our team by the way they stayed focused and fought through it."
Now, Houston will travel through some "uncharted waters" when they travel to Lafayette on Saturday to play the Green Wave later that night.
"We are one of a handful of Division I teams that will travel and play a game on the same day," Briles said. "We have told the team it is like crossing bridges and somehow getting to the other side. Last week, we did that with our win at Tulsa. Hopefully, we can do it again this week."
The Cougars also are playing a game in Lafayette for the first time since the 2003 season when Houston defeated the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, 21-14, in a torrential downpour.
"I just hope it is dry Saturday night," Briles said. "The last time we were there, we played in one of the worst rainstorms I have ever seen."
