HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team concluded the weekend at the Cougar Fall Classic taking five of seven singles matches against UTEP on Saturday, before sweeping 10 singles matches Sunday against Tyler and Lee College.
"Our record in singles play this weekend speaks for itself," head coach John Severence said. "This is really a testiment to the depth our team has this season."
The Cougars concluded the weekend with a 21-2 mark in singles play with 14 of the 15 wins during the weekend session coming in straight sets.
Loli Gomez, Kami Miller, Yolandi Terblanche, Vicky Simpson and Tiffany McLoughlin started Saturday with straight set wins against UTEP. Those five players dropped a combined 15 games between them.
In doubles action, Houston dropped two of three matches against Louisiana-Lafayette. Miller and Simpson registered an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 slot. The pair of Bateup and Sonja Nikolic lost an 8-4 decision in the No. 1 hole, while Gomez and Terblance were down 3-0 before an injury to Gomez forced the duo to retire.
Sunday's action was more of the same dominating fashion for the Cougars. Only Simpson's match with Jordan McCombs with Lee College went three sets. Simpson emerged with a 10-3 victory in the tiebreaker.
Terblance picked up a double bagel victory over Rachel Andres of Tyler, while Nikolic dismissed two opponents dropping only one game on the day.
Houston returns to the courts November 11-13 at the Florida State Fall Invitational in Tallahassee to conclude the fall season.
