HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team will make its home debut this weekend hosting the Cougar Fall Classic at the Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
Houston is coming off a strong showing at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regionals last week. Five of the six Cougars in the singles qualifying draw notched at least one victory, while Kami Miller paced UH picking up two wins in the main qualifying draw.
Brianna Bateup and Loli Gomez added wins for UH in the consolation section of the main singles draw last weekend in College Station.
The Cougars will play a series of dual matches over the weekend against future conference foe, UTEP, as well as square off against regional competition in Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Lafayette, Lee College and Tyler.
"This weekend will give us a good idea of how we stack up against some strong compition," head coach John Severence said. "Number one players are playing number ones. It's not our number four player playing someone elses number one like last weekend."
Houston begins singles play at 1pm Friday against Louisiana Tech and concludes the day with doubles action against Lee College slated for 2:30pm.
Day two sees UH open up with UTEP in singles at noon, before taking on Tyler and Louisiana-Lafayette in doubles after singles play is complete.
The Cougars conlude the tournament with singles action squaring off with Tyler slated for noon.
"This is a tournament that we're looking to win, not just to place," Severence said. "Playing at home should be an advantage and allow us to execute better than last weekend."
Admission to Hoff Courts is free for all fans wanting to attend.
