HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston wide receiver and return specialist Vincent Marshall (Ennis, Texas) today was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player-of-the-Week, as it was announced by the league office in Irving. This is the first weekly honor of Marshall's career, as well as the first for the Cougars in 2005.
Needing a spark after Mississippi State took a 13-7 lead, Marshall-subbing for an injured Ricky Wilson-returned a punt 56 yards for a second-quarter touchdown, giving the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish. It was the first punt return for a touchdown in 97 games for the Cougars, as Charles West's 87-yarder against Southern Miss on November 9, 1996, was Houston's last one.
Marshall finished with 203 all-purpose yards, with 96 punt return yards, four receptions for 49 yards, one rush for 21 yards and one kickoff return for 37 yards, which set up the Cougars third touchdown. The Cougars improved to 4-3 on the season with the 28-16 win over the Bulldogs.
The weekly honor is the first for Houston in almost a year, dating back to November 8, 2004, when safety Will Gulley picked up defensive accolades for his performance against East Carolina. It also is the first special teams honor for any Cougar since kicker Dustin Bell grabbed the last weekly award on December 1, 2003.
Memphis running back DeAngelo Williams was the C-USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week, while Tulsa safety Bobby Klinck picked up the defensive hardware.
Houston enjoys an off week before returning to the road for the final time this season, this time traveling to Orlando, Fla., for a first-ever meeting with UCF on Saturday, November 5. The game will be televised nationally on iTV beginning at 5:15 pm CST.
