IRVING - Outside hitter Kariny Ritter was named Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday afternoon as announced by the league office.
Ritter paced the Houston attack to a 2-0 weekend, dismantling C-USA foes SMU and Tulsa. For the weekend, Ritter unleashed an amazing six kills per game on a .289 attack percentage. Her 19 kills against SMU on Friday night put her over the 600-mark for her career. She was one dig away from recording her sixth double-double of the season.
"Kariny should be our best player all the time," head coach Bill Walton said, who is three wins away from 600 career victories. "She has the most experience and can jump high. If she can build on this weekend to have the motivation to lead her team, I think it would be good as well as give Justine (Farmer) something to shoot for over the next three years."
The Brazilian has registered double-digit kills in nine consecutive matches, including ripping at least 15 kills in seven of her last nine outings. Houston is 5-2 this season when Ritter leads the team in kills.
Ritter had a fantastic all-around weekend, matching a career-best posting six total blocks against Tulsa and headlined the Cougars tallying a 1.33 per game average over the weekend. She was also fourth on the squad adding 2.50 digs per contest.
Houston (8-8, 3-1 C-USA) hits the hardwood with a three-match winning streak at Southern Miss on Friday night. First serve in Hattiesburg is slated for 7pm.
