HOUSTON - University of Houston Baseball fans have less than three weeks to cast their ballots for the Rayner Noble All-Decade Team, and some of the positions may not be decided until the last votes are counted.
To date, nearly 700 ballots already have been received for the team, and with only 18 more days to vote, some of the races at the various positions are too close to call. In the race for second baseman, only 14 votes separate the top two contenders. At shortstop, the two leaders are separated by only 16 total votes. In the utility player category, the top two leaders are separated by only 14 votes.
Even the specialty awards are close. Although 23 different players have been nominated to date for the Rayner Noble All-Decade Team's Most Outstanding Player, the top two vote-getters are distanced by only nine votes as of noon, Monday.
Finally, the race remains tight for the Most Outstanding Team of the last 10 years with only 70 votes separating the two squads.
Fans can get their ballots at www.UHCougars.com by clicking on the advertisement for the team on the main page. Once fans have completely filled out their ballots, they can fax them to the UH Sports Information at 713-743-9411 or email them to Assistant SID Jeff Conrad at jaconrad@mail.uh.edu.
All ballots must be received by 5 p.m., Jan. 21 to be counted.
The Rayner Noble All-Decade Team will be unveiled as part of the Cougar Baseball program's annual preseason banquet on Jan. 29 at the UH Hilton. In addition, the 2005 UH Baseball team will be introduced, and former catcher Chris Snyder will be honored as the program's Professional Player of the Year.
