HOUSTON - The 2005 Houston tennis season gets underway this weekend as the Cougars host McNeese State on Sunday, Jan. 30 on the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts beginning at 2 p.m.
McNeese finished the 2004 campaign with a 15-5 record and a second-place finish in the Southland Conference and return six players from last year's squad.
Sunday's meeting will mark only the third meeting between the two schools where the Cougars own a 2-0 record over the Cowgirls, including a 5-2 victory to open the 2004 season.
The Cougars return four athletes from last season's 15-6 campaign and boast another strong recruiting class where Houston added two freshmen and a J.C. transfer.
Included in that group are two athletes who will be suiting up for the Cougars for the first time after joining the team in January.
Freshman Brianna Bateup from Victoria, Austrailia, and junior transfer Sarah Raimer out of Mesa Community College in Arizona, will add depth to an already potent Cougar lineup.
Houston comes into the match with senior Biljana Dimovska ranked as the No. 28 player in the Southwest Region. The double pairings of senior Diana Martin and junior Kami Miller are the No. 14 team in the region and the duo of freshmen Tiffany McLoughlin and Sacha Gumbs are the No. 15 team.
One year ago Dimovska was a Second Team All-Conference selection after finishing in the No. 23 singles position in the region and a No. 5 doubles pairings ranking.
Also making a name for herself is Miller, who was named the Conference USA Player of the Month for October (2004), and is one of the most versatile players on the team.
Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m. on main campus of the University of Houston where admission to the match is free to the public.
