HOUSTON - Beginning on Friday, the University of Houston women's tennis team will begin its 2004 Fall Season by traveling to California for a pair of tournaments in the Golden State.
First stop for the Cougars is the San Diego Tournament, hosted by San Diego State University. The three-day tournament runs Friday through Saturday, Oct. 1-3, with singles and doubles events.
The Cougars then travel to Pacific Palisades for the ITA All-American Qualifying Tournament at the Riviera Country Club, which is scheduled to run Tuesday, Sept. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 10.
The tournaments marks the coaching debut of new head coach John Severance and his assistant coach Amy Burson. Severance had previously served as the team's assistant coach for three season before taking over the head job this summer.
Houston returns four athletes in seniors Biljana Dimovska and Diana Martin as well as juniors Kami Martin and Yolandi Terblanche from last season's 15-6 squad. The Cougars also have two newcomers with the additions of freshmen Sacha Grumbs, from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and Tiffany McLoughlin of Baldwinsville, N.Y.
