HOUSTON - For the remainder of the 2004 football season the Cougars have all Conference USA teams ahead of them so the coaches and players are working hard to be able to make some noise as the season progresses.
With national powers Oklahoma and Miami behind them the Cougars have gained a lot of experience and are feeling confident about their chances as they head into their second conference game on Saturday.
"Our guys are preparing to represent ourselves and the University of Houston, that's what we are working for," said head coach Art Briles. "We feel like we have come a long way but we know we still have a long way to go."
So to get there the team has been working harder than ever to prepare for the conference season.
One of the areas of focus has been special teams, where the Cougars gave up a touchdown to Miami in the opening quarter off a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone.
"We have always put great emphasis on our special teams and nothing has changed from that standpoint. Our guys will perform this Saturday," said Briles.
Two weeks ago the Cougars got the conference scheduled started on the right foot with a win over Army that has the team at 1-0 in C-USA play, while Memphis is 0-1 with a loss to UAB.
"We're just ready to go out and play," said Briles of the upcoming game. "We want to keep improving every time we step on the field which is what we have been doing."
Improvement week-by-week is something the coaching staff has promised fans and continues to promise them and are very grateful to the Houston faithful that have been supporting the team.
"We appreciate the big crowd we had against Miami and all of our fans support," said Briles. "We are going to keep working hard to earn it."
Houston kicks off Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Memphis.
