HOUSTON - With four days remaining until the 2004 football season begins for the Cougars, the team is ready to get on the field and mix it up.
"Lets just say we have learned how to spell Rice," said head coach Art Briles. "We've been preparing for a month, its time to play. We're tired of talking, wanting, hoping, it is time for action."
Briles and the coaches are anxious to get on the field in a true game situation to see how far the Cougars have come in an intense off-season, spring and fall camp. The players have each strived to improve themselves physically and mentally and the work is paying off.
"We are a better team than we were a year ago because we are physically stronger, mentally tougher and more schematically advanced," said Briles. "Now saying that, what happens on the field is different thing. We have got to go out there and perform. That's all that's left - performance."
The players and coaches are anxious for the season to begin, with five players on national award watch lists the practices have been intense and full of excitement for Sunday's opener.
"We are right where we need to be," said Briles. "We don't have any excuses and we don't have any doubts - we are ready to see what we can do and put our money where our mouth is."
