HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston football team continued its preseason preparation for the 2004 season with an almost two-hour workout in the August sun on the UH Practice Fields. With his squad of 105 players aggressively attacking each drill and situation, UH head coach Art Briles likes his team's progress so far but cautiously looks for more focus among the troops. "It's hard to tell right now (how far along the team has progressed) when you're out here with yourselves and not in pads," said Briles. "We're after mental awareness, mental toughness, physical strength and unity. That's what we're after." The Cougars return to the practice field tomorrow afternoon at 3 pm, a change from two days of practice at 4 pm. Briles is quick to point out he and his staff are not looking to reinvent the wheel with this team. Instead, the second-year UH mentor is hoping the Cougars' natural talent and passion for the game of football will drive them to make each practice better than the previous one. "We're going to do what we've been doing," added Briles. "It's just like I told (the team.) If we don't know how to hand the ball off, throw and catch the ball, tackle, stay in bounds, block by now, we aren't going to know. These guys didn't start playing football yesterday. They've been playing anywhere from eight-to-ten years in some cases. "So, it's show time. It is time to have somebody stand up, blow a whistle, put a tee in the ground and kick it off." --- www.UHcougars.com ---
