HOUSTON, Texas - After two days of meetings, paperwork and orientation, the University of Houston Cougar football team took to the fields for the first time, holding their first practice of the 2004 season this afternoon on the UH Practice Fields. The Cougars held a spirited two-hour practice, which began under hot and humid conditions and ended under cloud cover that lowered temperatures significantly. Even with the early hot conditions, UH head coach Art Briles was extremely excited about seeing his Cougars under practice conditions. "We're really excited," commented the second-year head coach. "We had a really good workout (in the weight room) with our guys, and we were anxious to get on the field, put it together and see what happens. "We fell like we did a pretty good job last year. We can certainly do a lot better, so we're not going around patting ourselves on the back with our chests out. But, we're going to improve upon what we did wrong last year. The things we did right, we're going to try to do better, and just try to get better on a daily basis." The Cougars will have another opportunity to improve their team tomorrow afternoon, when UH returns to the practice field to continue fall camp. Houston has single practices scheduled through Sunday, with two-a-days beginning on Monday, August 16. Houston kicks off the season on September 5, at Reliant Stadium when it faces arch-rival Rice in the annual Administaff Bayou Bucket. --- www.UHcougars.com ---
