Houston wins nine events at Tom Tellez/Houston Invitational

Houston, Texas- - The University of Houston men's and women's track and field teams won eight events and had 10 second-place finishes at the Tom Tellez/Houston Invitational track and field meet on Sunday, May 2, at the Lewis/Tellez International Complex.
Jason Edwards won the men's long jump title with a wind-aided leap of 7.67 (25-2) and Tristian Whitley won the men's high jump championship after clearing 2.15 meters (7-0.50).
All-American Stanford Routt won the 100-meter dash with a season-best wind-aided time of 10.37 seconds and finished second behind teammate Carey LaCour in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.69 seconds. LaCour won the 200-meter dash just ahead of Routt with a season-best wind-aided time of 20.65 seconds. LaCour also was the runner-up in his first 400-meter race of the season with a time of 46.50 seconds.
Preston Perry had a second-place finish in the 100 meters behind Routt with a time of 10.50 seconds to qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
Houston also won the men's 4x100-meter relay race with a time of 40.35 seconds.
In the women's division, Houston won both relay races and Caresir Hamilton won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.73 meters (5-8). Allie Booker won the women's discus with a throw of 48.79 meters (160-1). The Lady Cougars won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.67 seconds and the 4x400-meter relay race with a time of 3:47.95.
Alicia Cave was the runner-up in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 58.06 seconds and finished in fourth place with a wind-aided time of 13.29 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Former UH All-American Jenny Adams won the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 12.72 seconds, while another former UH standout, Lauren Smith, was second with a wind-aided time of 13.13 seconds.
LaDedra Guy also had strong showings in the 100 and 200 meters as she finished second in both races to Savatheda Fynes of the Bahamian national team who was competing unattached. Fynes won the 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 11.34 seconds, while Guy finished second with a time of 11.40 seconds. Fynes also won the 200 meters with a time of 23.37 seconds, while Guy also was the runner-up with a time of 23.48 seconds.
Shayla Bowman was the runner-up in the women's hammer with a throw of 51.76 meters (169-10). Booker also had a third place finish in the hammer with a throw of 40.32 meters (132-3).
Tinisha Wesley was the runner-up in the women's shot put with a mark of 13.90 meters (45-7.25). Tiffany Bunton of Texas State won the event when she set a meet and stadium record with a throw of 16.75 meters (54-11.50).
Houston will travel to Louisville on May 13-15 to compete in the Conference USA Championships.
