Cougar Softball Knocks Off Top Seeded Southern Miss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No. 5 seed Houston (37-22) upset regular season champion Southern Miss, 5-1, in game three of the C-USA Tournament. In their second win of the day, the Cougars used seven hits, including a home run, to overcome No. 1 seed USM (32-23). The win also marks a school record for wins in a season, besting the mark of 36 set by the Cougars last season.
UH put up the first two runs of the game in the top of the third. Arelis Ferreris reached first on a single and scored on a Southern Miss throwing error. Then Kim Nesloney singled to right field to score Jaci Gonzalez.
The Cougars lengthened their lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Ferreris knocked a two-run homer off the left field scoreboard. She scored pinch runner Brandi Clark. It was Ferreris' ninth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Eagles threatened, putting two runners in scoring position off a hit and a Houston error. With two outs, Jessica Huerta struck out looking to end the inning short.
Brooke Johnson posted the Cougars' fifth run when she dropped an RBI double in the left center hole to score pinch runner Michelle Keith.
Sarah Boyd (2-for-3) put USM's lone run on the board with a her ninth home run of the season, a solo shot over center field.
Jamie Falco (6-5) pitched the complete-game victory, recording four strikeouts and scattering three hits.
Ferreris led Houston, hitting 2-for-3 and posting two RBI and two runs. Houston will face the winner of tonight's 4:30 p.m. game featuring Louisville and USF.
